Hulu no longer Free?

Hey Gamers,

It looks like Hulu’s co-parent Newscorp may soon seek to end Hulu’s free viewership and replace it with a premium fee based system.

Here’s the money quote from NewsCorpian Chase Carey, so there’s no confusion:

It’s time to start getting paid for broadcast content online. I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content. I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value. Hulu concurs with that, it needs to evolve to have a meaningful subscription model as part of its business

As to weather Hulu will become a only fee based system or a mix of both is yet to be seen. As plans to implement a paid permium service appear to still be in the works. With Hulu releasing the following statement.

Don’t worry, Hulu’s mission has always been to help people find and enjoy the world’s premium, professionally produced content. We continue to believe that the ad-supported, free service is the one that resonates most with the largest group of users and any possible new business models would serve to complement our

existing offering.

Thanks,

Betina Chan-Martin

Hulu

This is obviously a vague statement. So as to not alarm anyone, but its apparent with Newscorps continued talk of ad generated revenues longer being sufficient and paid memberships the way to go. It will be only a matter of time until Hulu changes formats. Maybe if were lucky the clips will still be free to watch.

How does this relate to gamers? Well, So far Hulu doesn’t offer any games to stream. Although there are some movies based on games available through their service. But since I put this under the misc section its fair game. I’m just sick of things being offered or promised for free, and then when its obvious they can make more money they just revoke said offering without a second thought.
